Platform Terminology
This page defines key terms used in the Kavenstead documentation and interface. It is intended to help first-time visitors and prospective users understand the language used across the platform before they begin reviewing content or submitting an enquiry.
Glossary
Key Terms and Their Meanings
The definitions below describe how each term is used within the context of Kavenstead specifically. Some terms may have broader or different meanings in other contexts.
Classification
The process of assigning one or more category labels to a piece of information based on its content type and relevant attributes. Classification determines how an item is stored, retrieved, and displayed within the system.
Taxonomy
The structured set of categories and sub-categories used by the platform to organise information. The taxonomy defines the possible classification labels and their hierarchical relationships. It is maintained by the Kavenstead team and may be updated as the system evolves.
Record
A single item of information within the system. Each record has been classified, assigned to one or more categories, and formatted for display in the platform's interface. Records are the basic unit of information that users review when using the system.
Category
A named group within the taxonomy that contains records sharing relevant common attributes. Categories are accessible through the platform's navigation and can be browsed independently. A record may belong to more than one category where its attributes are relevant to multiple groups.
Display Template
The standardised layout applied to records of a given type when they are presented in the interface. Each record type has an associated display template that determines which attributes are shown and in what order. Templates are designed to surface the most significant attributes without requiring the user to expand or open individual records.
Enquiry
A message submitted by a visitor through the Enquire page. Enquiries may be general questions, requests for specific information, access requests, or support matters. Each enquiry is reviewed by the Kavenstead team and receives a response by email.
Access Request
A specific type of enquiry in which a user requests permission to access a restricted area of the platform or a particular set of records. Access requests are assessed individually and are not automatically approved.
Navigation Structure
The set of menus, links, and breadcrumb elements that allow users to move between categories and pages within the platform. The navigation structure reflects the taxonomy and is designed to remain consistent across all areas of the system.
Information Interface
The visual and interactive layer through which users review records and navigate between categories. The interface is designed to present information consistently and to guide the user's attention without requiring manual configuration or layout adjustment.
Review Environment
The overall context in which users read, compare, and assess records within the system. The review environment includes the display templates, navigation structure, and any contextual aids available within the interface. It is intended to support efficient, informed review rather than casual browsing.
Using This Glossary
Notes for New Users
This glossary reflects the terminology as used in Kavenstead documentation and interface labels at the time of publication. If you encounter a term in the platform that is not defined here, or if a definition appears inconsistent with what you observe in the interface, please submit an enquiry using the form on the Enquire page. We will review and update this page where appropriate.
The glossary is not intended to be exhaustive. It covers the terms most likely to be unfamiliar to users approaching the platform for the first time. Users with a technical background may find that some terms have a broader meaning in other information systems; the definitions here describe Kavenstead's specific usage only.
If you have reviewed this page and the other documentation on this site and still have unanswered questions, the Enquire page provides a direct channel to the Kavenstead team. We aim to respond to all enquiries, including terminology questions, in a helpful and straightforward manner.
